Don’t Care How, I Want It Now: My List of 2K8 Must-Have Video Games

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted with anything more than empty rants about empty celebs at their empty celebration of themselves. Allow me to reiterate: I hate the Oscars. However, now that the cinematic blight is officially out of my head and I can think like a rational person again, I’m back to my normal rants and rave that involve important stuff. Prompted by my overload with new games I need to buy already, I’ve decide to put together a list detailing the games I absolutely must have this year. So as this is just about as self-indulgent as they come, I’m also going to tell you why you should be excited too. Because I’m nice like that. Here we go!

Condemned 2: Bloodshot — I still get the shivers thinking about playing the first iteration on 360 launch night. This is a game that forces you to get in contact with your inner ass-kicker, and it makes you love it. Realistic, sweet graphics, and a completely suspenseful and all-encompassing world, Condemned delivered like few initial launch titles. If Condemned 2 lives up to the first, everyone will be happy. (My favorite weapon is the crowbar — You?)

God of War: Chains of Olympus — While I don’t relish the idea of playing any God of War game on a tiny screen, the reviews for this PSP, 3rd iteration of one of my favorite game series of all time have really made me want to pick up one. I mean face it, the first two were so good, that even if the portable title doesn’t live up to them, it’ll still be really decent and something you can play on planes, trains or automobiles. I’d think it would be a hell of an investment.

Gears of War 2 – If you haven’t played the first for shame! I don’t think I really need to say much about this except for sweet multiplayer, lovely weapons and graphics so real, you’ll be wiping blood spatters off your face as soon as you start playing. Remember the workshop goggles kids.

Fallout 3 — Remember the peeps who brought you Elder Scrolls? (And millions of other gaming firsts but we won’t go into that right now…) Now they’re gearing up to bring you Fallout 3. Beautiful post-apocalyptic landscapes, amazing character design, innovative shooting systems and of course, all the strategy and action you could ask for. I really hope BethSoft stays on target with the release date on this one. I’m dying to get it in my hands, and you should be too.

Alone in the Dark — Hello, Central Park! Being a huge fan of this series definitely helps you to want to get your hands on it ASAP, but there’s a lot of other cool factors as well. The in-belt item system, the fact that it’s a survival horror game that’s based in the middle of a huge park. I mean, how great is that? Let’s take the horror out of small places and spread it to the world. Edward Carnby, here I come. Please undo the evil that ‘Alone in the Dark’ the film instilled upon the world.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed — I am a self-proclaimed Star Wars fanatic and have been since I was three. I was head over heels for Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 and couldn’t imagine any other Star Wars franchise game living up to those beauties. I now have faith again. Super-duper force powers that can affect other things besides people you’re wailing on? Plus you’re a dark side apprentice, which doesn’t give you choice, but you’re studying under Darth Vader. I’m not sure about you, but he was definitely my boyfriend when I was four. Wouldn’t mind studying with him…

Indiana Jones — When I saw this game demoed in the invite-only lucas arts booth at E3 06, I didn’t know what to do with myself. The physics, the incredibly smart AI, the unbelievably graphics. Not to mention you’re playing as the always cool, famous, and completely ageless Indiana Jones. Sadly, the movies are indeed susceptible to aging. (Why are you in there Shia LeBeouf?) I’ll be purchasing this game day of, just so I can hear that sweet, sweet soundtrack as I hold the action in MY HANDS.

Resident Evil 5 — I’m not sure if I need to explain why I want this so badly but here I go anyways. Zombies are back in the equation my friends, and I’m ready to caps some undead and bio-weapons. If Resident Evil 5 lives up to Resident Evil 4, there will be quite a few people who just can’t stand up from the couch for 10 minutes. Well, the girls will be able to. But not the boys. No, not the boys.

Spore — I got to see Will Wright demo this and I was in complete awe. I yearn to build civilizations, to create a race that worships me, and then send them out into the universe to annihilate everyone else. Spore’s bigger than imagination world size and immense options and choices gives me goosebumps.

LittleBigPlanet — It’s a game that you can make your own game in. I mean, that’s pretty sweet. It’s conceptual, pretty and adorable as all hell. It reminds me of the cutness of Viva Pinata but a little creeping darkness underneath. I can’t wait to take it for a test drive.

Heavy Rain — From the geniuses behind Indigo Prophecy comes a beautiful ‘interactive movie’ that pushes the limits in facial animation and emotional dimension. I’m sure it also comes with the haunting story, horrific choices and plain old strange happenings that Quantic Dream loves so much. (Psst. We love them too!)

Dead Space — This game is meant to be mess-your-pants frightening. I’m ok with that, others, not so much. I love a good, scary, third person shooter. They call to me. After my slight disappointment in F.E.A.R. with the scare-factors, I’m hoping Dead Space can make up for it. After all, in space, they can’t hear you scream. I can’t believe I wrote that, but I’m pretty sure it’s true.

I know this list makes me look really materialistic, and that’s ok, because when it comes to games, I absolutely am. I realise that I left out Wii games, and I’m sorry, but those really aren’t on my high priority list at the moment, seeing as how I need to finish Super Paper Mario and Super Mario Galaxy still, and I hate myself for it, but I’m not playing the Wii as much as I should. So, besides Wii games, let me know if I’ve missed any awesome titles, and go ahead and wax philosophical on your must-have-games in the comments.
